changetje because I wanted to do something for you. It’s written in a rush last night before I went to bed and might therefore have a lot of mistakes but I hope you will enjoy reading this anyway and that it will bring a smile to your face :)
Of course I hope that everyone else that might read this will enjoy it as well :)
Shige looks over at Kame from behind his mug of steaming hot coffee and smiles. They haven’t said anything to each other for several minutes but the silence doesn’t feel awkward. Not anymore. Not like it used to years ago when they first laid the foundation to what they now had.
It had started a afternoon in late September 2005 when he had almost run into Kame in the stairs in the agency building. Kame had been sitting on one of the steps, leaning against the wall looking tired and depressed. Shige had first ignored Kame thinking that he shouldn’t put his nose in where it didn’t belong but after just a few steps he had changed his mind and turned around.
“Kamenashi-kun?” he had said hesitatingly and gotten the other boys attention directed at him. Kame had looked at him with confusion reflecting in his eyes but didn’t say a word. “Would you like to join me for a cup of coffee?”
Shige didn’t know why he had asked that when the question most people probably would’ve asked was “Are you okay?”
Kame still hadn’t said anything and it had made Shige feel extremely uncomfortable and he had started to regret turning around and not having continued up the stairs instead. After long seconds of silence, maybe even minutes Kame had given him a nod so subtle that had Shige had almost not seen it.
At the time Shige hadn’t know much about what was going on in KAT-TUN and Kame hadn’t said anything as they shared a very awkward silence over a cup of coffee in a shop close to the agency. They didn’t say a single word to each other during the half an hour they spent together. Shige had thought about saying something but the words never came out. It wasn’t until they were back at work again that Kame said something.
“Thanks”
A weak smile had appeared on Kame’s face but even if it was weak it had reached his eyes and Shige had known that what Kame said came from the heart. Shige had just given him an awkward smile back before they parted.
A couple of weeks later Yamapi handed Shige a letter and told him that Kame had told him to give it to him. Yamapi had looked quite curious about why Kame would write a letter to him but didn’t ask. If he had Shige wouldn’t have known what to tell him because he didn’t have a clue and he didn’t open the letter until he was back home in his bedroom.
It had been a short letter written neatly on light blue paper. Kame once again thanked him for their time in the coffee shop and then he had written down his e-mail address and his phone number. Shige stored them both in his phone but never got around to use them until almost 8 months later.
It had been a hard day. Not because of a lot of work but because of the lack of work. News had been put on hiatus which had meant that Shige didn’t have as much to do anymore. He had been at home most of the day doing nothing and slowly going crazy. He had thought about calling Koyama or somebody else from the group but had decided against it. He didn’t want to talk to them. He didn’t want to talk to any of them because it would probably lead to talk about their indefinite future as a group.
He had been lying on his bed altering between watching a crack in the ceiling and going through his contact list. When he looked through his list for the fifth time he had suddenly stopped at Kame’s name and stared at it. He stared for several minutes, or at least it felt like it before he pressed the call button and placed the phone to his ear. Only two signals went through before someone answered.
“Kamenashi Kazuya. Who is this?”
Kame sounded a bit stressed and suddenly Shige had felt stupid for calling.
“It’s Kato Shigeaki” he mumbled into the phone.
“Kato-kun?”
The stress in Kame’s voice was replaced by confusion and Shige couldn’t blame him. A long time had gone by since they’d been in contact and they hadn’t even talked much at that time.
“I’m sorry for bothering you. I’ll hang up”
“No, you’re not bothering me. Where are you? Do you want to meet up for a coffee?”
Shige smiled for the first time that day and they agreed to meet up in an hour at the shop close to the agency.
They hadn’t spoken much that time either, just a few polite words and the atmosphere had been almost as awkward as the first time. Kame hadn’t asked anything about News and their hiatus. Shige had been grateful. He preferred not talking about it anymore. He had talked enough about it. He had cried enough about it. And he had realized that he had called Kame and agreed to meet up with him because he needed the company of someone who was an outsider. Someone who wasn’t in News.
After that their meet ups became more frequent. At first they called each other out when they felt down and just needed someone to be with so they wouldn’t feel alone. It had become an unspoken rule to never ask what was wrong or to mention work during their meetings. That changed over time though and one afternoon in April 2007 Kame had called him. His voice had been light and full with joy. He had sounded so genuinely happy that Shige hadn’t been able to stop himself from asking why that was even though they never spoke about feelings. Kame had just laughed and answered that it was because the sun was shining and the sky was blue. Shige had smiled for himself and then they had decided to meet up in the park where Kame currently was walking his dog. Shige had arrived with two cups of take away coffee and they had then spent an hour or two sitting on a bench enjoying the warmth provided by the early spring sun with Kame’s dog lying between them. That had probably been the day Shige had for the first time felt really comfortable with Kame.
After that day their meetings became even more frequent and they would meet up at least twice every month. The reasons varied. Sometimes the reasons were that either one of them just needed the company but other times the reason was that they wanted the others company. They still never really talked at least not about work or other people in the agency. They exchanged small talk about the weather or about the current news or about a movie they recently watched. Shige didn’t mind. He liked what they had created for themselves. The sanctuary they’d built up over the years where they didn’t need to worry about work or to impress others. He could just be and didn’t have to be afraid that Kame would judge him just like he would never judge Kame.
“More coffee?”
Kame’s question brings Shige back from his thoughts. Shige just nods and then watches as Kame pour some into the mug with the blue owl that he’s been drinking from. It’s the mug he always uses when he visits Kame for coffee. He likes to think that Kame bought that mug just for him just like he bought the mug with the turtle that Kame always uses when he visits him just for Kame.
“Thanks” he says when Kame moves the pot to pour some coffee into his own mug. He’s not thanking Kame for the coffee and the smile that appears on the other’s face tells him that Kame understands.
“Thanks” Kame replies and Shige can’t help but smile again.
The end.
