A/N: This story started out with me talking to
holly_berri about writing a JE ZOO AU. That was months ago but it’s first now that I actually finished this short fiction I think I could’ve done a better job though. However I didn’t manage to get the other members from News and KAT-TUN into the story. Maybe if I decide to make a sequel there will be more animals put into this universe.
Anyway, now I hope you all will enjoy this story :)
Jin moved as quickly as his small feet and his slightly clumsy body would allow him to do as he searched for his friends. He knew they must be there somewhere because the place wasn’t that big and there weren’t many places for them to hide. He especially had to find Kazuya because what he had just found mostly concerned Kazuya and himself.
“Kazuya!” Jin squeaked as he finally found him together with Ryo and Yamapi. “Kazuya we’re going to be parents!”
“Are you crazy Jin?” Kazuya deadpanned. “We can’t be parents. We’re both males”
“But I found an egg” Jin retorted and reached out for Kame’s flipper. “I’ll show you”
“Why do you think it’s your egg?” Ryo cut into the conversation. “It could very well be mine and Kazuya’s egg”
“Or mine” Yamapi added.
“It’s mine, and Kazuya’s because I found it” Jin gave the two penguins a poisonous glare before he started to pad away along the edge to their fake lake pulling Kazuya along with him. Ryo and Yamapi curiously followed them close behind.
“That’s not an egg” Ryo snorted as Jin showed them the egg he had found lying on the ground next to a small bush. “That’s a stone you stupid penguin”
“It’s an egg” Jin snapped back. “You’re just jealous that you’re not going to be a dad but I am”
“You wish” Ryo snapped back. “Come on Pi. Let’s get back to our food”
Yamapi hesitated slightly, looking at the small item lying on the ground before he followed Ryo back.
“You think it’s an egg right?” Jin asked Kazuya hopefully.
“It might be but it really looks a lot like a rock.” Kazuya bowed over slightly to give the egg a closer look. He reached out his flipper to touch it carefully.
“It is an egg” Jin was determined. “So we should start taking care of it. It needs our love and we should build a nest. You look after it so that that stupid sparrow Koki won’t come and take it from us while I go look for some good twigs”
“I hardly believe Koki would do something like that” Kazuya replied as Jin slowly started to move away.
“Do what?” a twitter was heard from above them and Jin cursed his bad luck that the damn bird had showed up.
“Jin thinks you might steal this if we leave it unguarded” Kazuya pointed at the egg next to him with one of his flippers.
“What is that?” Koki asked and flew down lower, skilfully avoiding Jin’s attempt to hit him. “A stone? Why would I steal a stone?”
“Can’t anyone else except for me see that that is an egg?” Jin squeaked in frustration.”It’s mine and Kazuya’s love egg!”
“Love egg? ” Koki let out a twittering laughter. “Have you seriously gone mental?”
Jin glared at him and tried to hit the smaller bird again but failed and fell forward unto the ground causing Koki to laugh harder. Kazuya moved over to Jin to help him back up on his feet.
“I have to fly and tell the rest! Love egg! ” Koki chirped with amusement more than obvious in his voice as he quickly flew away and left the two penguins alone with their egg.
“Here’s some twigs” Jin came back with his flippers filled with twigs and grass. “Koki’s not tried to steal our egg has he?”
“No” Kazuya replied taking some of the material away from Jin. He still wasn’t fully convinced that this really was an egg but it could never hurt to see what’d happen and Kame didn’t want to spoil Jin’s happiness over the fact that he might become a parent.
“So, uh... who’s going to, you know, incubate the egg?” Kazuya asked as they together started to make a nest around the egg.
“We’ll take turns of course.” Jin answered. “Don’t you know anything about us Magellanic Penguins? The parents take turn in doing it. You’ll start”
“Oh, so that would apply to when it’s two males as well?” Kazuya looked over at Jin. “And why do I have to start?”
“Of course it does. Love is love, right?” Jin looked back at Kazuya, and if it’d been possible for Kazuya to blush the white spots on his head would’ve turned pink. “And you start because you’re smaller. Bigger chance the egg won’t break”
“Oh, makes sense but you’ll have to bring me food then” Kazuya returned to working on the nest.
“Anything for you Kazuya” Jin chirped happily. “I’ll even give you some of mine food, and I’ll try to steal from Ryo and Pi as well. You need it better than any of us”
The first few days of incubation Kazuya and Jin had to withstand a lot of teasing from the other penguins and Koki who was gladly helping out as well as spreading the words about the nonexistent progress. It was hard but Kazuya didn’t let it get to him and Jin stayed as stubborn as ever in his beliefs that it was a real egg. Kazuya was actually kind of impressed at how stubborn Jin was and he started to believe this actually was a real egg as well.
After a couple of weeks however the teasing decreased and the only ones still throwing teasing words at them at times were Ryo and Koki. Yamapi had gone from teasing to actually getting interested in the progress and Jin thought that maybe he as well had started to think it was a real egg. He also thought that maybe Koki and Ryo was teasing them was because they were jealous. Who wouldn’t be? He was going to become a parent together with the most beautiful bird, no scratch that, most beautiful animal in the whole zoo.
It was a sunny day and Kazuya was sleeping while incubating the egg. Jin was lying next to him, sleeping as well and enjoying the warmth of the sun. Suddenly Jin woke up to the sound of Kame letting out a soft squawk of surprise.
“What is it?” Jin asked slightly worried and quickly got up on his feet.
“I think it’s time” Kazuya replied carefully getting out of the nest. Jin’s eyes grew wide as he saw how there was a clear spring on the surface of the egg and the sounds of something trying to crack through it.
“We’re becoming parents Kazuya!” Jin shrieked in happiness and pulled the other one into a big penguin hug. “We’re really becoming parents”
“So... So it seems” Kazuya replied astonished that Jin actually had been right. It was an egg and not a stone.
“I’m so happy!” Jin laughed and caressed Kazuya’s beak with his own in a way of affection.
“What’s the commotion about?” A twitter came from above and they both tore their eyes away from the egg to look up into the sky.
“The egg is hatching” Kazuya explained to Koki who was hovering above them.
“It is?” Koki sounded shocked.
“In your face stupid sparrow” Jin couldn’t help but spit out at the bird. “I was right and you were wrong”
“I can’t believe this” Koki flew down lower to take a closer look at the egg before he flew up again. “I need to tell everyone”
“Yes tell everyone that I was right and you all were wrong” Jin squeaked after him before turning to hold Kazuya just a little bit closer and continue on with watching the baby penguin working its way out.
Finally the baby was out in the sunlight and it let out a high pitched squeak. Jin blinked in confusion at the fussy baby in front of him. It didn’t look anything like the baby penguins he had seen before. Was it because it was incubated by two males?
“Jin” Kazuya started hesitatingly. “I don’t think that’s a penguin...”
“What is it then?” Jin asked back moving a bit closer to the baby who was looking at the world around it with black startled eyes.
“I think this is the baby of a seagull” Kazuya replied moving pass Jin to reach out a flipper and touch the small figure.
“A seagull?” Jin blinked a few times as he watched how the baby bird was nuzzling itself into Kazuya’s soft touches.
“Oh, well that doesn’t matter” Jin then said reaching out to pat the seagull baby as well. “It’s still ours and we’re going to raise it with love, right?”
“Yeah” Kazuya said, looking at Jin with adoration. “I actually didn’t know if I believe this was a egg or not, but I’m happy I got through this with you”
“Me too” Jin said and then picked up the baby carefully. “Welcome to our family baby Aiko”
The baby just squeaked happily in reply.
